Fans of the giant reptilian monster would be glad to know that the latest Japanese adaptation "Godzilla Resurgence" (also titled "Shin Godzilla" in Asia) is coming to American theaters this October. The new film was released in Japan back in July, and is slated to arrive in the U.S. on the week of October 11th.
According to Screencrush, the film has been picked up by Funimation for a U.S. release across 440 theaters nationwide. For those who are ni Los Angeles, a premiere date has been set for October 3. The film will also premiere in New York on October 5, just ahead of the New York Comic Con.
"Godzilla Resurgence" is directed by Hideaki Anno and produced by Toho Pictures, the original "Godzilla" creators. The film follows Kayoko Ann Patterson (Satomi Ishihara), a Special Envoy for the President of the United States who encounters a "crisis of conscience" after the U.N. and U.S. threaten to use nuclear weapons on Godzilla, who is on Tokyo soil.
Screenrant reports that "Godzilla Resurgence" was first announced back in December 2014, following the success of the Gareth Edwards-directed, David Callaham-written American film based on the reptilian monster. The 2014 film starred Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkins, David Strathairn, and Bryan Cranston, and earned $529 million in the box office.
While "Godzilla Resurgence" is not related to the "Godzilla-Kong" film series being developed by Edwards, Toho Pictures is partnering with Legendary Entertainment for the project. The upcoming film in the series is "Kong: Skull Island," which is directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and stars Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, and Samuel L. Jackson.
The first look at "Kong: Skull Island" debuted during this year's San Diego Comic Con. It is set to be released on March 10, 2017. Meanwhile, fans can wait to check out "Godzilla Resurgence" when it arrives to the U.S. on October 11.
