XCOM Shooter Has Not Been Cancelled, Says Take-Two

Take-Two Interactive reassured investors and fans that 2K Marin's XCOM shooter is still in development during an investor call yesterday.

"2K Marin continues to make progress on XCOM," the publisher told investors.

According to Take-Two executives, XCOM is still on track to launch during the 2014 fiscal year, which begins April 1st, 2013 and ends March 31st, 2014. The publisher anticipated the same launch window during an investor about a year ago. According to Joystiq, that was the last time either Take Two or 2K Marin spoke publicly about the project.

With the success of Firaxis' more faithful reboot of the franchise, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, some were beginning to wonder whether or not Take-Two, the game's publisher, had lost interest in the project. The XCOM shooter project was announced before Enemy Unknown was revealed to the public, and information on the game has obviously been scarce ever since.

In that time, rumors have indicated that 2K Marin may be dramatically changing XCOM's gameplay and scope. When it was announced, XCOM was a first-person shooter, but it's possible that the developer may have changed directions repurposing the game as a squad-based third-person shooter. A consumer survey also suggested that the game may be released exclusively as a downloadable title on all platforms.
