The Star Wars Universe Expands Again With Three New Marvel Comics

Marvel Comics, the original rights holders for Star Wars comics, have announced their first three projects set in the new Disney-owned galaxy far far away.

Way back in the 70s, right after Star Wars (at the time not yet Episode IV - A New Hope), Marvel Comics got the license to do comic adaptations of the movie. They tossed off Luke's journey and his destruction of the Death Star in the first 5-6 issues, and were then free to go their own way. Remember, this was before even The Empire Strikes Back! They took it to some pretty strange places, as evidenced by Jaxxon, Han Solo's 6 foot green rabbit buddy.

After Star Wars turned into the commercial behemoth it would remain for the rest of the universe's existence, Dark Horse did its comics for decades. But now, with the Disney purchase of both Marvel and Star Wars, it's only good business sense for those two to be married again.

Star Wars Episode VII Basic Plot Revealed

The first three in-continuity Star Wars comics since the great Expanded Universe Purge of 2014 will be: Star Wars (January 2015) by Jason Aaron and John Cassaday, Darth Vader (February 2015) by Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larrocca, and Princess Leia (March 2015) by Mark Waid and Terry Dodson. Leia's will be a five-issue miniseries as opposed to the former two, which will be ongoing.

Star Wars will deal with the original movies' main heroes and their rebel adventures between Hope and Empire, Vader will be about the Sith Lord struggling to keep his prestige in the Imperial hierarchy after his humiliation after the first Death Star's destruction, and Leia will concern the young princess processing the death of her homeworld of Alderaan while leading the rebellion.
