Sony today has announced that, for one weekend only, PlayStation 4 members who spent all their money on buying the PS4 will have free access to PlayStation Plus, the paid member service.

Sony, who is fondly remembering the all or nothing glory days of the early 2000s, back when the dream of an open, unfettered internet was alive, has come down from its high towers and will unlock the gates to the kingdom. Beginning this Friday, September 26 from 12:01 a.m. PST through Sunday, September 28 to 11:59 p.m. PST, all PS4 owners will have online multiplayer access to all PS4 titles. The free weekend does not grant them access to the wealth of free PS+ titles that are available each month (and one of the saving graces of the service).

I jest because I care, because I can be angry. The majority of games are heavily multiplayer focused, they're essentially designed with the MP portion of the game first, single-player second. That certain players should have to pay for the privilege of doing what the game is meant to do in the first place tests my patience, especially with the stellar graphics of the PS4. Destiny just looks so nice on it.

A yearlong Plus membership costs $49.99, a not too unreasonable amount. The Xbox Live Gold Membership will set you back $59.99. But it's less about the price and more about the principle. It's Pay to Play in another insidious form.

If PS+ rubs you the right way, you should pick it up and get Velocity 2X.
