The Dark Portal Invades Chinese Subway Station As Promotion For Warlords Of Draenor Expansion

Now, I'm not one to say that China gets all the cool stuff. But man, China gets all the cool stuff. Case in point: over the weekend one of Shanghai's busiest subway stations got a very real, and very awesome, promo for Warlords of Draenor, the fifth expansion to World of Warcraft.

Marketing firm NetEase has put up a copy of the famous Dark Portal which features heavily into the Warcraft mythology and Sina Games is on hand to take pictures.

Straphangers walking by the display can go 'beyond the Dark Portal'. The portal itself consists of a camera and a screen. People can stand in front of the camera and their image is shown on the screen, which comes pre-rendered with various swirling graphics and magic, much like the in-game portal does.

Several Warcraft characters make the occasional appearance, hurling fireballs and being otherwise energetic.

My only question is when does this come to New York City, like Gorehowl's giant Axe in Times Square? We just got a fancy new subway station at Fulton and could use a little geek touch. Can we at least get some posters? NetEase has put up a lot in the Shanghai station.

My only hope for the promotion is that the Dark Portal is in fact real and that during some late hours, with the subway station nearly empty, a child will accidentally stumble across the display and through no fault of his own, will be transported to Draenor (or Azeroth). He, or she, will then be the last, best hope for peace in a world torn apart by war.

Admit it, you'd see that movie.

Warlords of Draenor launches in China tomorrow, November 18.
