Smite MOBA World Championships Prize Pool Reaches $2 Million, Surpassing League Of Legend's 2014 Total

The prize pool for Smite's championship tournament has reached more than $2 million, becoming just the third franchise to reach that plateau for eSports and passing that for League of Legends' 2014 World Championships.

The total crowd-funded pool for the Smite World Championships currently sits at $2.14 million, where it will continue to grow until next month. The event for Hi-Rez Studios' MOBA will be held at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta from January 9 to 11.

Similar to a model employed by Dota 2 and other titles, funds were raised largely by a promotion called the Odyssey, which sells in-game items to players. Sales from the Odyssey will continue to add to the prize pool until the event, when eight qualified professional teams compete for the lion's share.
