The PC Gaming Holiday Gift Guide For 2014: Our Top Suggestions For Computer Hardware, Peripherals, And More

The holiday season is upon us, and we know there are plenty of you out there who still have gifts to buy for friends and loved ones. If that includes you and there's a PC gamer in your life, fear not--we're here for you.

Destiny Xur Location And Exotic Gear For This Weekend, December 19

Below you'll find our suggestions of gifts to purchase for a PC enthusiast. The gifts range from general to the more hardcore, and there should be something for everyone. To the suggestions!

Steam Gift Card

Simple--perhaps even obvious--but essential nonetheless. The digital distribution service sells thousands of games, and is well-known for its holiday sale. In case you're unfamiliar with Steam, be glad you've found this: if your gift recipient plays on PC, he or she is almost certainly using and browsing Steam. There's a sort of guilt associated with spending money on discounted games you might never play during one of Steam's sales, but it's all suddenly okay with a gift card. Your friend or loved one will undoubtedly appreciate having money specifically meant to be spent on Steam games, and you really can't go wrong here. They are available on Amazon and in most electronics retail locations at varying values.

A Gaming Mouse

It may sound silly to the uninitiated, but gamers know the difference a good mouse can make. With varying types of technology, sensitivity settings, and customizable lights and weights, there are a variety of mice to choose from. In order of price, Amazon currently has deals on the simple and effective Razer DeathAdder, the MMO-centric Razer Naga, the fully customizable Logitech G502 Proteus Core, and the pricey-but-fancy Mad Catz R.A.T.7. They range from $50 to $92 while on sale, so if you know if your recipient could make use of one, now's the time! Newegg has some of the same mice on sale, including the Corsair M65 and Logitech G700S.

Other Hardware/Peripherals

If you're prepared to spend a good amount (but still not as much as the two suggestions below), the person you're buying for would almost certainly appreciate an upgrade to their setup. A PC-specific wired Xbox One controller can be used for most PC titles--some games are just better with a control pad. Moving up in price, you can also buy them a new HD monitor, such as the 24-inch ASUS VG248QE or this more affordable Samsung 23-inch LED monitor. Newegg has plenty of options for other hardware, such as external hard drives (exciting, I know, but people need these things!).

Comfortable, Supportive Desk Chair

Sitting for hours on end has proven to come with negative health effects, especially for your back, so why not make someone more comfortable? Specially designed and ergonomic chairs can make a huge difference, though they'll cost you. A popular, pricey option is the Aeron Chair by Herman Miller (currently $899 on Amazon, cut more than $400 from the usual price), which by all reports is more amazingly comfortable than it may appear. The Lorell Executive High-Back Chair is a more affordable option, and it's even better for the $153.67 sale price. If you're all about the leather, there's the Boss Black LeatherPlus Executive Chair is $157.99 right now, and for a very cheap option the well-reviewed Mid Back Mesh Ergonomic chair is available for $34.99.

New Gaming Computer

If you're really feeling generous and know that the person you're buying for is in need, you could upgrade their entire setup with a new computer. There are some great deals on laptops including the very powerful and affordable ASUS ROG GL551 and the slightly cheaper Lenovo Y50. A pre-packaged laptop like one of those is likely better if you're not familiar with hardware, and those who prefer desktops might rather build their own. That said, there are some good deals out there--Amazon offers a host of options depending on your price range. On the pricier end of gift-giving, I know, but some people can hopefully make use of these suggestions.
