Robert Kirkman, creator of the hit comic and show The Walking Dead, spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the new show.

"So what we're trying to do with The Walking Dead spinoff is keep the story as familiar as possible for people that love The Walking Dead, so you'll get the kind of things that you expect from a Walking Dead story. But, at the same time, we'll want to tell these stories in a completely different way with completely different people in a completely different setting that's going to make for a fundamentally different show. I think the look and feel of The Walking Dead spinoff is going to be startlingly different," Kirkman said.

So... different then?

The setting is certainly something completely different, in California rather than Georgia. He also said that there wouldn't be any characters from the current The Walking Dead, which makes sense as they're across the country from each other.

Kirkman also revealed that you don't actually need to have a background in the original The Walking Dead to enjoy the new show. So people will be able to come into it with no prior knowledge of the universe its set in.

Although, what else do you need to know other than there are zombies outside?

Cobalt does not have a premiere date as of yet. The Walking Dead (original series) returns to AMC on February 8.
