‘Diablo 3’ Expansion Release Date, News & Update: 3 Interesting Theories Why The Next Diablo 3 Expansion Seems To Be In Limbo

It's been a while since the last Diablo 3 expansion has been introduced. If players can't seem to remember it, that is completely understandable. Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls was introduced almost three years ago which is considered a lifetime by gaming standards.

Now, gamers who have invested much in the game are a little bit worried, reports Forbes. Specifically, Blizzard's seeming lack of enthusiasm to do another Diablo 3 expansion had some players concerned about the direction the game could be going.

Resignation of Josh Mosqueira Makes Diablo 3 Expansion Unlikely

The recent resignation of Josh Mosqueira, Diablo 3 game director since 2011, started fears that another Diablo 3 expansion might no longer be undertaken. Though Mosqueira insisted that Diablo 3 is a team effort, many still credit him to be the game's driving force.

Of course, it is not impossible to do a Diablo 3 expansion without Mosqueira's guidance. However, it seems that undertaking such endeavor at this time could be a bit harder to the team.

Diablo 3 Expansion Shelved In Favor Of Newer Titles

Blizzard has been busy lately, but not just in developing a Diablo 3 expansion. The developer seem to be shifting focus from its traditional income earners like Diablo 3, Starcraft and WoW in favour of newer titles like Overwatch, Heroes of the Storm and Hearthstone.

This means that tons of resources such as manpower and budget went into developing these games. This means that the plans of a Diablo 3 expansion were shelved for now and the game goes into maintenance mode, releasing periodic small scale patches instead of a more encompassing Diablo 3 expansion.

Diablo 3 Expansion Could Be Shelved For A Diablo 4?

Here's a very exciting thought. Instead of doing a Diablo 3 expansion, what if Blizzard opts to develop an all-new Diablo 4 instead?

This might not be a far-fetched idea at all. It usually a good business decision to make another sequel once a game becomes highly successful like the Diablo 3 for instance.

In addition, Blizzard has been advertising the vacancy created Mosqueira's departure. But the interesting part is that that Blizzard did not only posted a job opening for game director but included half a dozen other positions as well. Is this going to be for the rumored Diable 4?
