Grand Theft Auto V Release Date: Rockstar Talks About The Possibility Of Taking GTA 'Back To The Future'

Could you see a Grand Theft Auto set in a future metropolitan area with hover cars and bikes? According to Rockstar, a GTA video game set in the future is very tempting.

In a recent interview with French publication Ecrans and spotted by OXM, Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser talked about setting a future GTA title in the future, but said that it would not happen until the studio has a compelling concept.

"We will do [a future setting] the very second we have an idea," Houser said. "One of our strengths is the consistency of the game world. We're not necessarily the best writers in the world, but we know how to write a video game."

He said when Rockstar decided to make Red Dead Revolver; it wasn't just because they wanted to make a Western video game, they made it because the studio had something to say.

"When we decided to make a Western, it was because we knew we had something to say," Houser said. "We have no interest in going into science fiction for the sake of flying cars and laser guns."

He continued, "The best science fiction stories are those that speak about the human condition. So while this idea is very tempting and, by definition, any thing's possible in a video game, we lack the essential thing for the moment: a good reason."

Houser also explained how Rockstar continues to stay fresh with it long-running game franchises.

"In the past some of our titles have been successful, others less so, but as long as we have the ambition of making the kinds of games that nobody's ever made before, we're not going to get bored," Houser said. "To offer an analogy with cinema, some films can be told in one page of text. Once the basic situation is there, you know exactly how it will evolve."

He added, "But if you're careful to change the narrative structure, it can change everything. Chris Nolan's Memento is a good example. That's the kind of approach we've achieved."

Grand Theft Auto V is currently scheduled to release in spring 2013 with some analyses saying April and others saying late-June. GTA5 is set in the fictional city of Los Santos, which was last seen in 2004's Grand Theft Auto: San Andres.

The game will not only feature the city area of Los Santos, but will also showcase the surrounding hills, countryside, and beaches. The game will feature the largest scale and detail ever found in the series including the depths of the ocean.

For the first time in the series the game will feature three protagonists with each individual character having his very own separate life away from the main story. This means that each protagonist has his own friends, home and extracurricular activities, which will provide more variety than the game's predecessor GTA4.
