iPhone 7 Release Date, News & Update: Waterproof Capabilities, Low Light Camera Performance Answers Cost Of Manufacture?

iPhone 7 has been rolled out as a tough handset that can be scratched, bent, dropped, and still remains solid. Apple's flagship product for this year also includes water resistance and low-light camera capability. Apple's product was also tested against Samsung's flagship product this year showing its true waterproof capabilities.

The Apple IPhone 7 has an IP67 rating, while Samsung Galaxy S7 has an IP68 rating. The Ingress Protection Marking (IP) is used for classifying and rating the degree of protection against intrusions like dust, accidental contact as well as water.

The IP67 rating for iPhone 7 is the indication that it will be able to survive a submersion in 1m deep water for 30 minutes. On the other hand, the Galaxy S7 has a higher rating at IP68 which means that even if it is submerged in up to 1.5m deep water for 30 minutes, it will survive. Based solely on the IP Code, the Galaxy S7 has an advantage.

Interestingly, a test was done to prove the waterproof capabilities of the iPhone 7 against the Galaxy S7. Dropping the two handsets both at 1.524m underwater, both did not suffer any damage, 9to5Mac  reported. Afterwards, both phones were dropped at 9.144m deep for 30 minutes.

The result was that iPhone 7's Home Button was no longer working properly while after rebooting the Galaxy S7, it was still functional. Finally, a third test at 10.668m deep for 5 minutes showed the iPhone 7 still functioning although water damage can be visible on its display and the Home Button also became more sensitive. Its counterpart, the Galaxy S7's display stopped functioning although its camera flash and LED indicator was still functional.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 7 ad also showed the phone's camera performance in low light, MacRumors reported. The ad showed a skateboarder in late night being captured on the camera's low light capabilities. The ad also showed the iPhone 7 recording a video through a mist of lawn sprayers. Moths were captured dancing around a dim light bulb clearly as well as a moonlit cityscape.

The iPhone 7 was also launched with high-resolution cameras and no headphone jacks. The retail price of an unsubsidized 32GB model costs $649 while the cost of making the iPhone 7 reportedly rose to $224.80 plus $5 in basic manufacturing costs. Material costs are higher now than in the past, IHS Markit senior director of cost benchmarking services Andrew Rassweiler noted.
