Grand Theft Auto 5 already completed for PlayStation 4?

Rockstar’s upcoming open-world heavyweight title Grand Theft Auto 5 is setting up to be one of the biggest blockbusters of 2013, and while we are still dealing with the immense number of leaks and speculations over the months, there’s still some more to follow on before the final game arrives for the fans.

A new report from The Sixth Axis states that it has taken hold of the new Greatness Awaits commercial for the PlayStation that’s currently doing rounds on the web, and judging by the behind the screen footage, the setting looks exactly the same as that of the GTA 5 live action commercial. However, the video shows that this time the GTA banner has been replaced by Jonathon Blow’s The Witness.

“The first question then – why were the banners swapped? Back when pictures of the shoot leaked, fansite GTAV.net posted that after checking with sources, they’d found that the shoot was not for GTAV itself, but for a PlayStation commercial (which we now know to be correct). The site suggested that not only was the shoot nothing to do with Rockstar, but that the production team used the logo without consulting Rockstar, which seems surprising but not unheard of for a project of this scale, where things might slip through the cracks,” the report says.

It further states that assuming that GTAV.net’s report is correct, “Sony used the logo in error. But why did they use it in the first place? Small references aside (there’s an omega symbol in the style of God of War as part of graffiti outside the shop named ‘MacGrath Market’, despite Infamous’ Cole not being in the newest game, and it looks to be a creature from The Last of Us that the narrator knocks away) the ad is considerably more a PS4 promo than a general PlayStation one – whilst the ad simply ends with a generic PlayStation logo, the company seems to be heavily pushing it in relation to the upcoming console, and PS4-only games like Knack and The Elder Scrolls Online are featured.”

Now we already know (not a fact, though) that a game of GTA’s magnitude will hardly come on only PS3 or Xbox 360, and with all the festivities surrounding the announcement of next generation consoles, it would actually be a huge surprise if the game didn’t arrive on these consoles. So what was the point of changing the ad banner? Was it because Rockstar has already completed the development of GTA 5 and just waiting to announce the date (that it might have pushed further back for some reason)? Nobody knows and will know until we get any official confirmation.

GTA 5’s release will unveil a lot of previously unknown features of the game, but for the time being, you can settle and make your own assumptions from the ad below.
