PlayStation 4 Sales: Sony's Current Generation Consoles Sells 6 Million Units

Sony's PlayStation 4 Sells 6 Million Units

Via the PlayStation Blog, PlayStation's VP of Marketing behind the console division of Sony, John Koller, has announced that accumulative PlayStation 4 sales have reached 6 million. The PlayStation 4 as of December 28, 2013 had sold 4.2 million units from the time of release. Last month that number was 5.3 million. PlayStation's current generation home console released in Japan over a week ago, taking global sales numbers to 6 million units. In regards to the impressive numbers Koller writes, “ It’s truly humbling to see the rate at which gamers across the globe are choosing PS4 as their next gen console of choice.”

Koller then goes on to write that more than 90% of PlayStation 4 consoles in the United States are connected online. “Even more exciting is what happens when gamers power up their PS4s. In the United States, more than 90% of PS4s are online, enabling gamers to connect, compete and share their greatness with friends and fellow gamers,” the VP of marketing wrote.

As for the PlayStation 4's broadcasting integration, Koller has stated that more than 3.6 million broadcasts along with 56 million spectator instances, across Twitch and Ustream, have been logged. We recently posted about the PlayStation 4 accounting for 20% of Twitch's broadcasts last month. Koller reiterates this statistic in his blog post, also revealing that the DUALSHOCK 4's Share button has been used over 100 million times.

Xbox One VS PS4: More Developers Working on PS4 Titles Than Any Other Console, Xbox One Owners Report Losing Video After Update

These are fairly impressive numbers if I do say so myself. Sony may have arguably lagged behind last console generation when it came to initial sales and adoption, but the PlayStation 4 has seen great success since its release in November 2013. Sony took the opportunity to take shots at Microsoft amidst the Xbox One's controversial features, and that put Sony's console in the favor of many gamers. Microsoft may have backtracked on always-online DRM and a persistent Kinect connection, but that may have put them behind PlayStation in terms of public favor, at least for now.

Now, let's see if Microsoft also publishes console numbers this week.
