Rockstar's parent company Take-Two Interactive just revealed that "GTA V" has now sold over 160 million units in its entire lifetime. According to GameInformer, this figure was shared during the company's most recent earnings call, which also revealed that the entire "Grand Theft Auto" franchise had sold over 370 million units all-time.

This is an insane number considering that the game has been out for so long since 2013, to be exact. It is one of the few games which has been released on three different console generations, as it originally launched for the PS3 and Xbox 360 nine years prior.

Since then, it seemed like the open-world crime romp has never slowed down a bit. Rockstar has been keeping the game alive via constant updates, specifically to its Online multiplayer component. The most recent update included DLC missions that featured legendary rapper and hip-hop producer Dr. Dre, called "The Contract".

But that's not the entire story regarding "Grand Theft Auto V's" numbers. As per the original GameInformer report, the game has also reached a massive $1 billion in overall retail sales much faster than any other entertainment release in history.

This is such a crazy feat because it means that "GTA V" has outpaced every blockbuster movie, TV series, or any other entertainment content ever made to a $1 billion total gross. But aside from that, it is also the best-selling game of the decade in the United States, according to dollar sales and overall units sold.

It could be safe to say that Rockstar and Take-Two have already recouped their $265 million investment and much more.

Will 'GTA V's' Success Hamper 'GTA 6'?

It can be safe to say that the massive success of "GTA V" could mean a ton of pressure on devs to build on it. But as the next game is still very early in development, it's hard to say how the previous game's success will dictate its footing.

There's almost nothing else known about "GTA 6" after it was announced. But according to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, there are plans to share more news on "GTA 6" as the development cycle pushes on.

He shared a caveat, though. It all depends on the team at Rockstar, as reported by IGN. Zelnick made it clear that the studio would always decide when and how to announce any upcoming projects and that Take-Two itself doesn't have much of a say in the reveal.

Rockstar will have to focus on other games in the "Grand Theft Auto" franchise, specifically the controversial Definitive Edition. Fixes are still coming for the relaunched trilogy as of late, which launched in an extremely broken state that's gotten so many loyal franchise fans livid.
