"Elite Dangerous" surprised the fans with shocking news this week following an announcement about the 2021 Odyssey DLC expansion.
According to Frontier Developments, the developer behind this space sim game would no longer release further updates for the seven-year-old game. The British video game studio will now focus on bringing new content to PC instead of Xbox and PlayStation.
'Elite Dangerous' to Move Forward With the Story
Frontier announced that it would now abandon the upcoming DLC for "Elite Dangerous" in console platforms.
Per Engadget's report posted on Friday, Mar. 11, Frontier CEO David Bran announced the sad news for fans who are expecting a new DLC for "Elite Dangerous."
"We have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development," the studio chief said.
Braben highlighted the tough decision of the team to focus only on a single codebase. Between the codebases from PC and consoles, the developer chose to land more updates on PC in the future. This would also prompt Frontiers to advance with the game's storyline.
Having said that, "critical" updates will still reach Xbox and PlayStation platforms. However, the exclusive changes will only be available for PC users.
Prior to this announcement, Braben spoke to fans about the Odyssey expansion. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been some issues regarding its production. That's why several delays have taken place as a result.

There's one specific query about the developer's plans to launch the game in the next-gen consoles such as Xbox Series X and PS5. The team confirmed that they have no plans to release it for the said consoles.
While this is bad news for some players, you might feel relieved for the next response. It appears that Frontier is on its way to "exploring" options for implementing a cross-save feature so you can continue your progress if you're playing on a PC or console.
