'Apex Legends' PS5 And Xbox Series X Versions Drop Today--Here's What To Expect

'Apex Legends' Finally Gets Long-Awaited Next-Gen Update For PS5, Series X

PS5 and Xbox Series X owners will finally have a crack at a native version of "Apex Legends" on their current-gen consoles. That means they don't have to play the backward-compatible versions anymore and will have access to some next-gen specific extra features.

These features, according to Eurogamer, will include 4K HDR and 60 FPS. There will also be sharper-looking, high-res maps and improved graphics, render distance (i.e. you can see things from much further away). A better render distance would be a boon for a battle royale game like "Apex" since you're always on the lookout on the horizon for any enemies.

Future updates will come after the initial release of the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of "Apex Legends". Players can expect 120FPS support (because a 60FPS lock on a fast-paced game isn't ideal) and haptic feedback/adaptive triggers on the PlayStation 5's excellent DualSense controller.

The "Apex Legends" next-gen console update (not to be confused with an actual next-gen update) launches part of The Warriors Collection event. Here is a launch trailer for the event, uploaded on the game's official YouTube channel:

How To Update 'Apex Legends' For PS5 And Xbox Series X

The official "Apex Legends" Twitter profile posted images detailing how PS5 and Xbox Series X players can update their respective games. For Series X owners, Microsoft is doing the work for you with their Smart Delivery feature. As such, you don't need to update your game manually.

But if you own a PS5, here's what you need to do:

  • Go to the game hub for "Apex Legends" on your console's Dashboard.
  • Choose the Options button, which can be found next to the Play Game button.
  • Choose the Select Version button and pick the PS5-specific version of the game.
  • After the download and installation are finished, go to your game library to delete the old PS4 version so you don't accidentally play it.

Why You Should Be Excited For 'Apex Legends' Next Gen Update

Next-gen gaming is in full swing, and there's a lot to be excited about with this new update for "Apex."

First up, there's the upcoming 120FPS patch. For now, the game is going to be locked at 60FPS on both the PS5 and Series X. This is still pretty smooth, but not as smooth as 120FPS, considering how both consoles can render that much with their official 120Hz support.

A higher frame rate (combined with a high refresh rate) means that your game will run smoother and snappier, able to respond to your controller inputs in the blink of an eye. In a fast-paced, highly competitive game like "Apex Legends," every single quick-twitch movement counts. And only high frame rates with high refresh rates can give you that kind of experience.
