#SteamSpotlight Killing Floor: The Mod Turned Video Game That Takes Survival Horror Co-Op to the Next Level

Though the years, we have seen countless games, even those considered the best of the best, receive mods. Many of these mods are even created by gamers who want to add a little more fun, comedy, and even difficulty to a particular game.

There are times, however, when a mod ends up being more than just that and actually becomes a full-fledged game itself. That is exactly what happened with Killing Floor, which is the featured video game for today's #SteamSpotlight.

#SteamSpotlight Feature: Killing Floor

Killing Floor is essentially a co-operative survival horror title that is also a first-person shooter game. Developed and published by Tripwire Interactive, it was released in 2009 for Microsoft Windows. An OS X version of the game was released a year later.

The game actually started of as a mod for Unreal Tournament 2004, a first-person arena shooter game released by Epic Games and Digital Extremes.

Zombies seem to be synonymous with survival horror games and Killing Floor is no exception. In this game, players are tasked with defeating wave upon wave of ZEDs, which are actually zombie-like humans who have been experimented on and are now mutated and disfigured.

At the end of the waves of ZEDs, which actually increases in difficulty, players have to deal with a boss battle against what is known in the game as the Patriarch.

To beat the enemies, players can use the weapons scattered around the level. If the players are on the Objective game mode, they are able to earn in-game money by completing challenges. Having enough money can allow a player to buy and sell ammon, weapons, and more at a trader.

Steam Reviews for Killing Floor

According to its Steam page, Killing Floor has more than 35,000 reviews on the platform as of press time. These reviews are described as "Overwhelmingly Positive" by Steam.

A Steam user with the handle Lord Stamtish praised the Patriarch in particular in his review, calling the antagonist as a "freaking amazing boss." He also describes Kiiling Floor as a really cool game that he recommends that others play with their friends.

Another Steam user who goes by the handle m o n k e says that while not many people play the game this days, Killing Floor is still "a great game." In fact, it can be an alternative to another survival horror game, Left 4 Dead.

Killing Floor 2

Unsurprisingly, Killing Floor was such a hit that a sequel eventually came out in 2016. Killing Floor 2 gives the player the option to play alone or cooperatively with other players.

Similarly to the original game, the sequel pits the players against wave after wave of ZEDs with a boss battle awaiting them once they have survived all the waves of enemies.

Killing Floor 2 is likewise available for purchase on Steam. It has more than 70,000 reviews as of writing, which are described as "Very Positive" by the platform.
