Classified Military Intel Get Leaked On War Thunder Forums AGAIN

The War Thunder Forums Play Host To Third Such Leak Of Classified Intel

For the third time, the War Thunder forums played host once again to a series of leaked classified military documents - all because a bunch of gamers wanted to prove a point about design inaccuracies online.

The aforementioned War Thunder player shared classified military intel to prove that the design of ammo for Chinese tanks in the game is inaccurate, as reported by IGN. An image depicting the DTC10-125 tungsten penetrator was uploaded to the game's forums recently, alongside a technical document - both of which were uploaded because the unnamed gamer was "angry" about small design inaccuracies.

In another report by the UK Defence Journal, a picture of the purported classified document looks to outline some armor-penetration numbers of the tank ammunition. The part in question here is a 125mm sabot round fired by the Chinese Type 99 and Type 96 Main Battle Tank. The document presents figures detailing how the sabot round penetrates composite and RHA armor, alongside other information such as dispersion and muzzle velocity at ambient temperature.

In simpler terms, the leaked military document basically lays out what the Chinese military's tanks have to counter the armor of other countries' main battle tanks. Posting such a classified document on a very public forum might as well be a treasonous offense.

As a response, the moderators of the War Thunder forums had to remove the post. They said that any document related to the DTC10-125 tank ammo are classified in China, though the authenticity of it still cannot be verified as of this writing.

War Thunder is a free-to-play game pitting players driving military vehicles (tanks, planes, and ships/boats). The game prides itself for offering accurate depictions of these vehicles, which is likely why the gamer got incensed enough to leak out classified military intel to prove how the game isn't so accurate at all.

But that really doesn't matter when matters of a nation's defense program are being talked about - as previously mentioned, this kind of thing can be considered a treasonous offense.

The First Two Times Military Intel Got Leaked On The War Thunder Forums

As previously mentioned, this is the third major instance that classified military documents were posted on the War Thunder forums in the spirit of "accuracy."

The first instance occurred way back in July of last year, a user who goes by the handle @_Fear_Naught_ posted some documents detailing a British Challenger 2 tank, reports NME. The user was particularly pissed off by how developer Gaijin didn't get the design of the tank's gun right. By posting the document, the forum member committed a violation of the Official Secrets Act - a law in effect in over 40 countries - which could lead to a 14-year prison sentence.

Next up, the second time a similar classified document was posted on the forums occurred several months later in October 2021. This time, the schematics for a French Leclerc tank were leaked by someone who claims to have been a former Leclerc crew member (via the UK Defence Journal). Moderators were once again quick to delete the post, while also warning that leaking the documents puts the lives of those who work daily with the tanks in danger.
