#RePlay Feature for the Week is None Other Than PlayStation Game Vagrant Story

Are you ready for this week's #RePlay feature? We sure are!

#RePlay is a relatively new series we have here in GameNGuide. If this is your first time coming across a #RePlay feature, what you have to know is that this series focuses on video games from older consoles, such as the PlayStation, PlayStation 2, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, and more.

Each feature always answers one question and that is if the game can be played once more on newer consoles. Hence, the name #RePlay. Sometimes, the answer is yes. Sometimes, the answer is no.

For today's feature, we shine the spotlight on a PlayStation game from Square Enix. It is none other than Vagrant Story. Can you guess if this game can be played again by new and old fans alike today?

Square Enix was still known simply as Square when it developed Vagrant Story and released it in 2000. According to the article by Inverse, the game was written and directed by the creator of Final Fantasy Tactics, Yasumi Matsuno.

The game follows the story of a character named Ashley Riot, who is a member of the Valendia Knights of the Peace. As its name suggests, the Valendia Knights of the Peace are tasked with making sure that security and law of the state are upheld.

Riot is pursuing the leader of a religious cult called Müllenkamp and his quest brings him to the city of Lea Monde.

The story of Vagrant Story deals heavily with politics. It also requires precision, according to an article by Kotaku, especially when you, as Ashley Riot, find yourself in the middle of the turn-based battles in the game.

A Game Ahead of Its Time

Inverse describes Vagrant Story as a game that is "years ahead of its time in terms of cutscene direction, presentation, and overall aesthetic.

"In many ways, Vagrant Story feels like a precursor to games like Dark Souls, an unrelenting role-playing experience that refuses to hold the player's hand and puts a huge emphasis on exploration and subtle storytelling," Inverse says in its article.

For Kotaku, Vagrant Story did something bold for the Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPG) genre.

Is It Still Possible to RePlay Vagrant Story Today?

To an extent, yes. You can still play Vagrant Story on consoles that are more modern than the original PlayStation. However, there is a catch.

The game was released via the PlayStation Network and only for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, and PlayStation Vita. What that means is in order to still be able to play the game today, you should have one of those three consoles that is still functioning.
