As reported by WCCFTech, the over 9-minute video from IGN gives a bit of the background of the city of Gotham - how it is founded, by whom, and how it plays into the events of the game. In the video, the development team at Warner Bros Montreal revealed that the city is divided into five distinct sections or boroughs.

Each of these is ruled by a founding family of Gotham, which obviously includes our dear Batman's family, the Waynes. They're joined by the Elliots, Cobblepots, Kanes, and the Arkhams - who as you recognize are the folks for whom the infamous asylum is named after. Basically, the entire city was founded by a bunch of "Old Money" families, each of them controlling a critical aspect of the city's existence.

The Kanes, for instance, were arms manufacturers and dealers. The Cobblepots were industrialists who owned a bunch of steel mills, who we assume are the ones that helped Gotham's skyline grow over a couple of hundred years. The Elliots were mass media moguls; the Arkhams then built their famous asylum in the 1960s, which is basically Warner Bros Montreal's confirmation that Arkham Asylum IS in the game. But it won't be as players remember it in Rocksteady's Batman Arkham franchise.

To cap things off, the Kanes and the Waynes will be the ones that will help usher the city into the modern age. This will be the crime-fighting sandbox that Batman's proteges will get to explore in Gotham Knights. While Warner Bros didn't exactly give a square mile figure for the actual size of the city, they did mention how eac borough would look and feel completely different from the others.

The devs designed the city to be able to "tell a story without someone saying it out loud." As such, there will be a lot of sections where it almost seems like
Gotham is "stuck in time." And players will get to explore all of these areas once Gotham Knights lands on next-gen consoles and PC on October 25th.

Gotham Knights Gameplay: What Can Players Expect?

In an earlier episode of IGN First, players got a closer look at the first 16 minutes of Gotham Knights' gameplay. This snippet featured Batgirl and her mission to infiltrate Gotham University, investigate the apparent death of a professor, and fight some baddies that have taken over the campus.

At the start of the mission, players get to pick which character they want to play as. Batgirl was chosen for this one, obviously, and she proceeds to showcase all of her gameplay elements in one go - traversal, melee combat, stealth, and investigative skills. It's all of the elements that fans know and love from the iconic Batman Arkham games - blown up into a massive open world far bigger than anything else in a Batman game before.
