Long flights and layovers can be  tedious, leaving you feeling exhausted and uncomfortable. However, there are a few steps you can take to make the experience more bearable. Let's look at some of the best tried and true tips to help you get through long flights and layovers more comfortably.

1. Venture Outward

If your layover is going to last several hours, get out of the airport and explore! This is a wonderful way to take a mini-trip during your travel adventure and see more of the world.

For example, if you flew into London Heathrow, take the tube into the city, and use the King's Cross Station luggage storage facilities. That way, you won't need to drag fifty pounds of luggage all over the city and you can easily re-collect your baggage before heading to the next leg of your journey.

2. Dress Comfortably

The next step towards making long flights and layovers more comfortable is to dress appropriately. Opt for loose-fitting, comfortable clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen.

Avoid tight or restrictive clothing, and steer clear of synthetic fabrics that can make you feel hot and uncomfortable. Wear comfortable shoes that are easy to slip on and off, as you will need to take them off during security checks. Even in the warmer months of the year, consider bringing a light jacket or cardigan to make chilly airports and planes more bearable.

3. Pack a Travel Pillow

A travel pillow can make a huge difference in your comfort during a long flight or layover. There are several types of travel pillows available, from inflatable neck pillows to full-body pillows. Choose the one that works best for you (and the size of your seat), and make sure to pack it in your personal bag for easy access during your flight.

4. Bring Earplugs or Noise-Canceling Headphones

Long flights and layovers can be noisy, making it difficult to relax or sleep. Earplugs or noise-canceling headphones can help you block out unwanted noise from engines or other passengers and create a peaceful environment. You can also listen to relaxing music or white noise to help you sleep during the flight.

5. Stay Hydrated

Bring a refillable water bottle and fill it up after security checks. Drink plenty of water throughout the flight to prevent dehydration, which can lead to headaches and fatigue.

Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks, as they can dehydrate you even further. (At the very least, be sure to drink a glass of water for every glass of alcohol or coffee you consume.)

6. Pack Healthy Snacks

Airport food can be expensive and unhealthy, so it's a smart idea to pack your own nutritious snacks.

Bring snacks like nuts, trail mix, granola bars, or fruit to keep you energized and satisfied during the flight. You might want to also pack a small meal if you have an especially long layover or a connecting flight.

7. Move Around

Sitting for a long time can lead to stiffness and discomfort. Get up and walk around the cabin or airport terminal every hour or so to stretch your legs and improve circulation.

While on the plane, you can still do some light exercises or stretches in your seat to keep your body moving. Pay attention to announcements by your captain, though - if the seatbelt light is on, stay seated and fastened in.

8. Bring Entertainment

Long flights and layovers can be boring, so bring some entertainment to keep yourself occupied. Pack a book, a tablet, or a portable game console to keep you entertained during the flight or in the terminal.

You can also download movies or TV shows to your device before the flight or stream them using the airline's in-flight entertainment system. Also make sure you keep charging cords on hand, and bring an outlet adapter if you're flying internationally.

9. Consider Upgrading Your Seat

If you have a long flight ahead of you, consider upgrading your seat to a more comfortable class. Business class or first class seats often offer more legroom, wider seats, and better amenities like blankets and pillows. On many long haul flights, these seats will even recline into a completely flat bed.

While it may be more expensive, buying a nicer seat can make a big difference in how comfortable you feel during the flight.

10. Get Some Rest

If you have a long layover, consider getting some rest in a quiet corner or a designated sleep area.

Bring a travel pillow and a blanket, and try to find a comfortable spot where you can lie down and get some shut-eye. You can also book a hotel room at the airport or nearby if you have an especially long or overnight layover.

Arrive Refreshed and Ready To Go

Long flights and layovers can be a daunting and uncomfortable experience, but by following these tips, you can make the journey much more bearable. From dressing comfortably to packing healthy snacks, staying hydrated, and taking advantage of airport amenities, there are plenty of ways to make the journey more comfortable and enjoyable.

Remember to prioritize your comfort and well-being, and don't be afraid to splurge on upgrades or amenities that can make the journey more comfortable. With these tips, you can arrive at your destination feeling refreshed and ready to explore.
