Blizzard put its once-popular MOBA game Heroes of the Storm in maintenance mode back in 2022. However, this did not stop a group of passionate fans from making their own version of the game. Players who want a fresh take on HoTS can try a Starcraft II mod called "Resurgence of the Storm."

Prime for a Resurgence

Heroes of the Storm has been in maintenance mode for quite some time now. It is a term used to refer to a game that will no longer see new content being introduced, but that the developers still support it via occasional bug fixes and balancing changes.

Understandably, this has upset many fans because Heroes of the Storm is quite enjoyable. However, there are many reasons why Blizzard has pulled the plug on this one, mainly that it does not bring in more money than its other games like World of Warcraft or Diablo IV.

The good news is that a group of very passionate fans took it upon themselves to recreate the magic HoTS once had in the form of a custom mod known as Resurgence of the Storm.

Resurgence of the Storm is a Starcraft II mod that is made from the ground up. It currently features a roster of 15 heroes, including 12 familiar ones and two newcomers. They are:

  • Abathur

  • Anduin

  • Artanis

  • Arthas

  • Auriel

  • Diablo

  • E.T.C.

  • Falstad

  • Jaina

  • Kerrigan

  • Malfurion

  • Ragnaros

  • Selendis (New)

  • Talandar (New)

  • Tychus

Selendis is an entirely new hero made for Resurgence of the Storm. Selendis is a mobile melee assassin who can slice and dice her enemies using her deadly psi blades. She possesses abilities that allow her to utilize technology exclusive to the Protoss faction in Starcraft II.

For example, Solar Lance enables Selendis to have two crossing beams fired at a target location. Enemies caught in the area of effect receive a considerable amount of damage.

Additionally, Selendis can use her background as a Zealot to perform a specialized attack called Zealous Rush. When used, Selendis dashes through a target hero, dealing heavy damage. She also gains a protective shield that lasts for a few seconds, allowing her some time to escape without getting killed due to a counterattack.

Talandar is an exclusive hero for Resurgence of the Storm as well. He is a more sturdy bruiser capable of dispensing pain to his opponents. He has a unique mechanic where he gains a point of Solarite Energy every six seconds (up to a maximum of three Solarite Energy). This resource allows him to empower his basic attacks, giving them new effects.

Solar Blast, one of the abilities available in Talandar's kit, allows him to unleash a devastating blast in a cone in front of him, dealing massive damage to those who are hit. If he has Solarite Energy at the time this ability is used, the damage of this attack against enemy heroes is increased by 50% per point of Energy.

How to Play RoTS

Those who are interested in trying Resurgence of the Storm for themselves can head to its official server on Discord. Head to the "Patcher" channel and download the software. When executed, the program will ask players to navigate to their Starcraft II installation folder so that it can patch it up with the mod's files.

Once that is done, just fire up Starcraft II, head to the "Arcade" section of the main menu, and the mod should be available from there.

Do you love Heroes of the Storm? If so, are you going to try Resurgence of the Storm out?
