Mortal Kombat 1 Ermac Trailer Shows Off DLC Fighter's Soul-Shattering Combos

Mortal Kombat 1 has dropped its latest trailer for the game's upcoming new DLC fighter, Ermac, showcasing the combatant's soul-shattering combos and prowess.

The new playable character will join the official Mortal Kombat 1 roster later this month and he is considered a bit of a series regular. He first made his initial appearance in the franchise back in 1995 in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.

The upcoming DLC is also not the first time that Ermac will be in Mortal Kombat 1 as he has already appeared in the game's Story Mode. However, the new update will mark the first that players will actually be able to take control of him in the latest title in the series.

Warner Bros. explained in a press release that Ermac is a collection of souls that are bound together by Quan Chi's dark magic. These souls are intended to function as a group mind. However, the spell was temporarily undone when Mileena defeated Ermac, causing the mind of King Jerrod to take control to rejoin the royal family, according to Eurogamer.

The amalgam of souls eventually reestablishes control and Ermac then retreats to Outworld's shadows. As he is no longer a slave to Quan Chi, nor bound to the royal family, the soulful fighter must find a future that he deems worth fighting for.

The new DLC trailer also shows Ermac's supernatural abilities in action against other fighters in Mortal Kombat 1's roster. The footage offers a look at his teleportation and levitation moves along with his ability to grab, lift, and slam opponents by harnessing the power of his souls.

Furthermore, the trailer also showed Ermac's Fatality, which is a signature mechanic in the franchise, which this time ends with a tiny pile of carefully arranged limbs. Owners of Mortal Kombat 1 can take control of the new fighter and will have to purchase the Kombat Pack on Apr. 16. A standalone DLC release will also be available on Apr. 23.

The Ermac DLC also comes after NetherRealm received criticism for a previous design reveal of the soul-shattering fighter. There, he was shown without his distinctive mask and had what many fans called a simplistic design, said IGN.

A Soul-Shattering Experience

However, the newest trailer appears to have shown that this has been corrected as Ermac is seen wearing a mask, sporting a more detailed outfit, and his abilities now glow in teal. The character's redesign is already well-received by fans even ahead of the DLC's release and the newest trailer had a reference to the previous debate about the old design.

In the video, Reptile said, "You've changed since we first met," as Ermac replies, "We believe for the better." The Kombat Pack that includes early access to Ermac also features the Jean-Claude Van Damme character skin for Johnny Cage, a one-week early access to six playable DLC characters, and five DLC Kameo fighters.

The creator of the Mortal Kombat franchise, Ed Boon, took to social media to tease the return of Ermac as he faces off against Kung Lao. He said that it was more than three decades ago when they worked on the first game in the series, according to Forbes.
