New 'Pokémon Winds And Waves' Starters Revealed, But Which Region It is Based On?

The 30th Pokemon Anniversary is sweeter than we thought with this revelation.

The Pokémon franchise has officially entered a new chapter with the reveal of "Pokémon Winds and Waves" during the 30th anniversary Pokémon Presents event.

Introducing Generation 10, the upcoming title promises expansive open-world gameplay, a vibrant island-inspired region, and three brand-new starter Pokémon that are already leaving fans in extreme bliss and curiosity.

Generation 10 Starters: Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua

Continuing the iconic Grass, Fire, and Water trio formula, the Gen 10 starters present familiar archetypes with creative design twists, according to Polygon.

Browt, the Grass-type Bean Chick Pokémon, stands one foot tall and weighs 7.7 pounds. With the Overgrow ability, Browt appears destined for a swift, nature-focused evolution line that emphasizes agility and battlefield control.

Pombon, the Fire-type Puppy Pokémon, is quickly emerging as a fan favorite. Measuring one foot four inches tall and equipped with Blaze, Pombon combines companion-dog charm with the potential for explosive offensive stats. Its evolutionary design is unpredictable, but most fans expect it to be a furry beast with high-speed physical attacks.

Rounding out the trio is Gecqua, the Water Gecko Pokémon. Compact and agile, Gecqua carries the Torrent ability and hints at sleek aquatic evolutions built for fluid movement and tactical versatility in competitive play. It might be another Sobble in the making, but at the moment, no information is available yet.

Expansive Open-World Island Region

Building on the design philosophy of Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet, "Winds and Waves" embraces full open-world exploration.

Trainers will traverse tropical islands, dense jungles, volcanic caverns, and sprawling ocean routes filled with diverse Pokémon ecosystems. Environmental storytelling and regional biodiversity appear central to the game's narrative structure.

Southeast Asia Inspiration

Although unconfirmed, the region's geography strongly resembles Indonesia and broader Southeast Asia, known for its rainforests and island chains, Insider Gaming wrote.

The title hints at Legendary Pokémon tied to wind and sea mythology, potentially pointing to the sky and ocean lore within the franchise. Scheduled for release in 2027 as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, "Pokémon Winds and Waves" is already a surprising release for fans who grew up with the lore.

Some Reddit folks said that the inspiration is Malaysia, while others believe it's like a Philippine archipelago.

Another Switch 2 exclusive Pokémon game is "Pokopia," a sandbox game that resembles "Animal Crossing" in a Pokémon style.
