A new leak has claimed to have revealed the expected price range for Valve's upcoming console, the Steam Machine, which is set to deliver a different kind of gaming experience that is powered by the SteamOS.
This leak claims that Valve will offer the Steam Machine at a reasonable price, and it is a surprising but welcomed information should it prove to be true. This is because previous rumors claimed that its pricing was set to be egregious due to the component shortage.
Steam Machine Leak Unveils Reasonable Price
Last year, Valve announced the Steam Machine for release in 2026. At the time, there was no word on a precise release date or price point. That has not changed as of press time, but a new report has seemingly addressed the price question.
The leak comes from a well-known voice in the hardware space. Hardware insider Moore's Law Is Dead noted that recent sharp increases in the price of memory and storage components are contributing to the machine costing more than originally anticipated.
According to the claim, the Steam Machine should cost somewhere between $600 and $650.
For context on where that pricing lands relative to existing hardware, the reported price costs more than a PS5 but less than a PS5 Pro, and the Steam Machine is newer hardware than both.
It is worth remembering how the original Steam Machine was received. According to ComicBook Gaming, the first Steam Machine, which many considered a massive flop, was priced at $449, with prices rising for better versions.
In 2026, $449 for a novel, niche gaming device is already good value, but for a device from a decade ago, it was pricey.
Valve's Steam Machine Still Faces Delays
The pricing concern is real, but the bigger issue for potential buyers right now is the wait. Valve has not revealed a precise release date for the Steam Machine.
The expectation is that it will not be cheap to produce due to production restraints, global shipping issues, component shortages, and more.
The Steam Controller already launched ahead of the Steam Machine. The controller does not require the scarce components like RAM or GPU, so its launch remained unaffected.
