'Battlefield 4' News: PS3 Free Trial Live Today On PlayStation Plus [VIDEO]

PlayStation 3 Owners Can Get Battlefield 4 For Free Today on PS Plus

As old saying goes, "membership has its perks," and that sure is the truth today for any PlayStation Plus members, as a free trial for Battlefield 4 is now live for PlayStation 3 gamers with access to the service.

New Trailer Shows Riot Shields and Drones from Battlefield 4's Last Stand

The news came yesterday courtesy of a post on the PlayStation Blog from DICE's Community Manager Vincent Vokovic, who penned, "PS3 owners with a PlayStation Plus membership in North America can experience DICE's action shooter for free. A trial version of Battlefield 4 will be available for download starting tomorrow, May 27th, on the PlayStation Store."

Once players download the trial version, they'll have a total of 20 hours of playtime with the game, as well as access to the campaign mode in its entirety. It wasn't specified how long the trial would be up for grabs on the service, but as long as PlayStation Plus members have downloaded it, they'll be able to access all of Battlefield 4 between now and rapture. Or until they forget to pay for another month of PS Plus.

Battlefield 4 stars a new protagonist to the series, that of Sergeant Daniel Recker, a member of the elite Tombstone Squad. He and the squad learn that an Admiral is in the midst of planning a coup to overthrow the current Chinese regime, with Russia ready to back him up. You don't have to be an expert in foreign relations and politics to realize this would cause one hell of a domino effect that would see the whole planet embroiled in war.

Three pieces of DLC for the game have already been released in China Rising, Naval Assault, and Second Strike, and the developer has been teasing the final two pieces of DLC, Dragon's Teeth and Final Stand. Last week, a new video dropped showing some of the new content, like the Ballistic Shield from Dragon's Teeth, and the "Multiple Kill Vehicle" gadget coming in Final Stand. You can check out the video below.

The Shield is said to be able to absorb all forms of gunfire, but don't expect it to hold up to well against explosions. It's best left used as a support item, as the picture shows, as holding the shield requires both hands, meaning players won't be able to fire any weapons. But they'll be able to bash enemies as a last resort.

Joining the shield is the other new gadget, the RAWR, or, "Remote Assisted Weaponized Robot." Infinitely cooler than a simple shield, this little A.I. assassin comes equipped with a light machine gun and four grenade launchers.

There was a massive leak on Dragon's Teeth earlier this month, allegedly revealing the DLC's map names, assignments, dog tags, and a new game mode, but DICE nor EA has either confirmed or denied this information as accurate. Here's a quick recap:

New Mode
Called "Chainlink," the new mode is rumored to be a variation of Conquest, wherein players must link adjacent capture points, causing the opponents' tickets to bleed quicker.

Once Dragon's Teeth drops, Battlefield 4 players have one more piece of DLC to look forward to with Final Stand. Release information hasn't been given for either DLC yet, but expect it to be free to Season Pass holders, and cost the usual $15 for everyone else.

Battlefield 4 is currently available for PlayStation 3 and 4, Xbox 360 and One, and PC.
