'League Of Legends 2' Will Never Happen According To Developer, Artist 'Wants His Grand-Children' Playing Original Game

League Of Legends 2 Will Never Happen According To Developer, Prefer To Update Original Game Forever

Developer Riot Games has explained that if anyone's waiting for a League of Legends 2, well, don't hold your breath.

Grand Theft Auto V Announced For PC, PS4, And Xbox One: When Can We Expect It?

A sequel will never be forthcoming, the studio told Polygon, as it plans instead to simply update the original title in perpetuity. "I want my great grand-children playing this game," senior environment artist Brent Critchfield told the gaming website.

The digital nature of the game and the modern ability to upgrade titles through patches means the developers should be able to improve League of Legends as much as they wish going forward, doing away with the need for a sequel.

Since the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) title is free-to-play, there would be no sales generated by a sequel, removing that incentive for the team at Riot. If it can be done with patches--and theoretically, everything they'll want to do can be--there is no financial or entertainment reason that a sequel would be required, unlike many other franchises.

Riot Games did say a separate, new property is likely at some point, though the representative from the studio did not reveal any plans to Polygon. For the time being, League of Legends remains extremely popular, with daily users growing to over 27 million earlier this year. The plan to never release a sequel may disappoint some fans, but it's hard to argue with the logic behind the studio's decision.
