Xbox One Store Offers Up Free Trial Games And Demos: OS Update Allows Indie Titles To Be Found More Easily On Digital Marketplace

Xbox One Store Offers Up Trial Versions And Demos For Games And Better Search For Indie Titles

Times are tough and the sheer number of games out now is staggering. We get more and more games each day, and our wallets are not getting any bigger. The fine folks at Microsoft have remembered this and have updated the Xbox One functionality to better include free game trials. Now you can download a demo version and, if you like the game, get the full one no problem.

Xbox 360 owners will know that many a game was ultimately purchased through use of the trial system, wherein you downloaded a demo, which was a level or two of the game, and then could upgrade to the full game itself. It is so easy and simple, and yet was missing on the robust and powerful Xbox One. No longer.

"But now we do. In the same way that we update the Xbox One OS every month, they update the development system every month - or regularly, anyway. So that's something that we recently turned on. I don't think we've seen any ID@Xbox games yet that have shipped with trials, but we may well in the future. It's something that's open to everybody." Microsoft's ID@Xbox boss Chris Charla told Eurogamer.

Microsoft will also emphasize their ID@Xbox lineup. Currently, there is no way to delineate between massive, half-a-billion dollar budget games and the small indie ones made by a guy in his basement. Destiny doesn't need any more press, but the recently launched Outlast should have its own corner of the store to call its home.

"Saying that, we have had a lot of player requests for some way to specifically find the ID@Xbox games," he admitted, "so we have talked about adding some functionality so that people can do a search for just the ID@Xbox games.

With the addition of the new trials mechanic, the ID@Xbox line should start to see more and more titles released, especially in 2015. Though game designers do still have some concerns over the dev kit policies, Microsoft is being mum on the point.
