Assassin's Creed Unity Details: Brotherhood Missions Can Be Completed Alone, Skill Progression Will Not Be Mandatory

Assassin's Creed Unity Encourages You To Have Friends, But You Can Still Play Through The Whole Game Solo

A couple of new videos from the Assassin's Creed Unity team have confirmed that the game's "Brotherhood" co-op missions can still be completed solo. Further, the player can complete the entire game without upgrading Arno's skills in the new skill progression system.

Assassin's Creed Unity's Season Pass Includes Access To A Whole New Game Set In 16th-Century China

Though we've known for a while that Unity would be encouraging co-op play through "Brotherhood" missions that focus on the events of the French Revolution, a new video posted by Ubisoft today reveals that players have three options when starting these missions, one of which being to go it alone. The player can also choose to invite his friends into the mission or let the game's matchmaking system pair you up with some appropriate Assassin teammates.

Customization also plays a big role in the upcoming next-gen game. The player will be able to outfit Arno with different clothing items that increase his various skills. Players will also be able to upgrade Arno through a series of skill trees that emphasize different playstyles. This skill progression system, however, is not mandatory. In a new developer Q-and-A video, Ubisoft revealed that no mission will ever require a specific skill upgrade. The skills will just serve as bonuses that allow the player to tackle missions in different ways.

Rogue Predictions: Historical Figures And Events We Might See In Ubisoft's Upcoming Last-Gen Assassin's Creed Title

These kinds of open-ended missions in Unity have been mentioned before, but we now know where the inspiration came from, too. A Unity DevBlog post talked to Associate Level Design Director Christophe Rossignol, who mentioned that his background making Far Cry 3, another Ubisoft game, helped create the open feel of Unity's missions. The Outpost missions in Far Cry 3 presented the player with an objective but didn't give him a series of checkpoints for how to complete it. This idea was utilized in every mission in Unity, creating these open-ended "black box" missions that Ubisoft has been advertising.

Assassin's Creed Unity will drop for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC systems on November 11.
