Nintendo Announces Crystal Blue And Crystal Red Transparent 2DS Systems, Releasing Alongside Pokemon Omega Ruby And Alpha Sapphire

Nintendo Announces Two New Transparent 2DS Systems, Just In Time For The New Pokemon Games

Nintendo announced today two new 2DS models that channel the transparent designs of Game Boys past and will be released in North America on the same day as Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

The two new models are called the Crystal Red and Crystal Blue 2DS. The semi-transparent design of the systems' shells allow players to check out some of the electronics that the system has going on under the hood. The two are set to hit stores shelves for $99.99 each, a pretty good deal for the 2DS. As you might suspect with the red and blue coloring, these models are also meant to help raise hype for the two new Pokémon games – Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire – that are coming at the end of the month.

Both the systems and the games are set to go on sale November 21.

The 2DS offers the same features as the standard 3DS, with two notable differences. The 2DS comes without hinges and plays all games, even if they're 3D-compatible, in a 2D display. Both of these changes are actually meant to make the system more appealing to younger gamers who still want to be able to experience Nintendo's mobile game offerings. The lack of hinges removes the biggest structural weak point of the 3DS, the area where a reckless, younger player would be liable to break the system. And because Nintendo advises younger players not to use the 3DS's 3D display, that removal from the 2DS makes it that much more appealing to the young audience.

The low price point doesn't hurt, either.

Other than those changes, the 2DS has all of the other trappings of the 3DS, including cameras and the ability to play games from both the 3DS and the original Nintendo DS library.
