'I Am Bread' Update Celebrates 'Star Wars' Day With Fully Playable Space Sim Mode 'Starch Wars - A New Loaf'

I Am Bread is already an absurd game, allowing players to control slices or loafs of bread across floors and walls in an attempt to make it through a room. The only way to dial up the ridiculousness, of course, is to tie it into Star Wars Day.

Our Guide To The Video Games Scheduled For Release This Week

Bossa Studios has released a free, playable game mode called Starch Wars - A New Loaf that takes players into space with fully controllable ships. Yes, this is real, and yes, it's available right now.

Without specifically naming Star Wars as its inspiration--though it quite obviously is--the debut trailer below spoofs the original film's opening sequence, complete with grain-based space vessels. It then opens up to actual gameplay, showing fans that this is a real mode you can play. Here's Bossa's description:

"Following the destruction of the Petrol Station, the remaining crumbs of the rebellious fleet have been intercepted as they head to the planet of All-dough-naan. A lone freedom fighter with the call sign Bread Leader picks up the distress signal and speeds to their aid. And yep, you guessed it; he's their only hope."

Yooka-Laylee Kickstarter Becomes The Fastest Gaming Campaign Ever

Without having played myself, it's unclear exactly how deep the mode is or what you can do, but at the very least there's some toast and baguettes (and "Rye Fighters") firing at one another in space. In the end, it's a free, wholly unnecessary update, which is what makes it so great. If you own I Am Bread and have completed the opening chapter, you can jump right in to Starch Wars as long as you download the patch.
