Google Duo Release: New HD Video Call App Has One Unique Feature

Google introduced a new video calling app called Duo, set for release this summer. It is a high-definition software that allows users to, well, start and enjoy face-to-face mobile conversations.

Some are quick to point the app's similarity to Apple's FaceTime, but because it's slated to arrive on both Android and iOS devices, a wider consumer reach is imminent. Use of the service is simple: select a contact and initiate call. Calls are end-to-end encrypted, just like messaging in Allo.

Taking cues from Hangouts and the Chrome browser, Google appears to establish itself in the web video calling space, Business Insider writes. It is also worth mentioning that Duo comes with a standout feature called Knock Knock.

Knock Knock basically works as a caller preview. Erik Kay, engineering manager at Google, said it's a "live video stream of the caller before you've even picked up."

"[Users] not only see who's calling, but what they're up to and why they're calling. A smile, a beach, and a newborn baby can all draw you into the moment, making calls feel spontaneous and natural, and once you pick up Duo it puts you right into the call," Kay added.

As per VentureBeat, Duo runs on quick UDP Internet connections (QUIC), Google's protocol revealed last year. Reportedly, this tech is able to handle "seamless handoff" between cellular and Wi-Fi calls. This means Duo will work the same whether or not one's network is lightning-fast.

Why Google intended to separate Duo from Allo remains to be known, but there are easy reasons to speculate on. According to TechCrunch, first, the separation will keep user experiences "simple and lightweight," and second, it's something not done by counterpart products. Functionality-wise, Allo is hence comparable to Messenger, while Duo is indeed seen as a FaceTime rival.
