‘Overwatch’ Latest News & Update: ‘Overwatch’ Beats ‘League Of Legends’ In South Korea

For four years, "League of Legends" has been the most successful first-person shooter game in South Korea. Now, "Overwatch" tops the list in South Korea's most popular first-person shooter game.

'Overwatch' Dethrones 'League Of Legends'

The critically-acclaimed first-person shooter "Overwatch" has reached more than 10 million players since it launched last month, Gamespot said.

In fact, "Overwatch" was ranked among the best selling games in May despite being launched towards the end of the month.

The success of "Overwatch" was so immense that the characters were transformed into Street Fighter V and Pokemon trainers. It's popularity now has penetrated South Korean internet cafes a.k.a. PC bangs.

According to Korean video game tracking site Gametrics, "Overwatch" currently holds the top spot with over 30 percent of gamers playing in internet cafes. The second spot goes to Riot Games' "League of Legends" with 27.8 percent.

For four years, "League of Legends" dominated South Korean charts as the most played first-person shooter game. Gamerant said that "Overwatch" has overtaken this week.

"League of Legends" analyst MonteCristo commended Blizzard's success with "Overwatch."

The analyst tweeted the ranking, showing clearly that "Overwatch" claims the top spot in the weekly South Korean gaming charts since "League of Legends" in August 2012.

Blizzard Games

"Overwatch" developer Blizzard has long since been popular in Korea mainly because of its real-time strategy games like "StarCraft" and "StarCraft II." It's no surprise that "Overwatch" has overtaken "League of Legends" as well.

However, considering the tight competition between "Overwatch" and "League of Legends," the top spot should still change in the coming weeks.

It is noted though those Korean players are among the first to try "Overwatch's" competitive play mode and special weapons.

This may indicate that "Overwatch" may be in for a long haul at the top spot. Blizzard is set to launch "Overwatch" competitive play mode any time soon.
