Toronto Film Festival 2012: New Clips of Ryan Gosling in 'The Place Beyond The Pines' Released

"The Place Beyond the Pines" has been a much-talked about movie this season. It unites director Derek Cianfrance and Ryan Gosling, whose movie, "Blue Valentine," garnered much acclaim.

"Blue Valentine" took the director 12 years to bring on screen, but his latest, "The Place Beyond the Pines," took less than five.

"The Place Beyond the Pines" is a generational drama where Gosling plays a motorcycle stunt driver turned into a bank robber, who has to support his newborn kid. He comes into conflict with Bradley Cooper, a cop. Their feuds spill over to the next generation, where their sons too get embroiled.

The movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, where its distribution rights were picked up by Focus Features.

Two clips of the movie were released. In one clip, Gosling is giving a statement to investigator Bruce Greenwood; and in the other, Gosling is preparing for a bank robbery. Cianfrance told Vulture that they consulted real bank robbers so that they could get it right.

"We were doing a lot of long takes in the film, because I always think whenever you cut, there's a lie. So we would have these long takes where Ryan would have to park his bike, go into a bank, rob the bank, get on his motorcycle, go into traffic, be pursued by a police officer, and go into an intersection and narrowly avoid 36 cars," Cianfrance said. "And we had to shoot that scene 22 times. Every time we went through the intersection I felt like he was gonna crash, you know?"

"He has told a tremendous story about unintended legacies, struggling to break free from the lives others have unintentionally laid out for us, and yet perhaps being locked into a destiny when we know of no other path," reviewed Matt Goldberg of Collider. "There are crossroads, but there are also blind alleys, winding passages, and these avenues may lead us into uncharted territory or where our fathers tread before. Tightly constructed but never constrained, 'The Place Beyond the Pines' is a marvel of storytelling, and a powerful exploration of conscious crimes and unexpected punishments."

The movie will also star Eva Mendes, Ben Mendelsohn, Rose Byrne, Bruce Greenwood and Ray Liotta. It will hit theatres in 2013.
