With big blockbusters come highly-anticipated sequels. Here's a list of some of the most talked-about movie follow-ups and what fans can expect from them.
"Star Trek Beyond"
The third installment in the intergalactic saga will be due on July 22. "Star Trek Beyond" will show the USS Enterprise facing an attack from an unstoppable cluster of unknown aliens. Having been forced out of their ship, the crew gets stranded in an unknown planet awaiting rescue and fighting for their lives.
"Star Trek Beyond" recently stirred controversy as Hikaru Sulu, currently portrayed by John Cho, is being depicted as a gay man in the movie. Scriptwriter Simon Pegg and director Justin Lin made the decision in honor of George Takei, who played Sulu in the original saga and is a notable LGBT rights activist.
"Transformers 5"
Michael Bay will return to helm the fifth movie in the "Transformers" franchise, titled "Transformers: The Last Knight," wherein Mark Wahlberg will reprise his lead role as Cade Yeager.
Nickelodeon star Isabela Moner is also joining the "Transformers 5" cast. According to The Wrap, the character is described as an orphaned "street-smart tomboy" who has a small Transformer whom she considers her only friend. This mutual connection with the Autobots connects her to Wahlberg's character.
Josh Duhamel, who was part of the first three "Transformers" films as Captain William Lennox, will return in "Transformers: The Last Knight"; however, though bits of his storyline were not revealed, it is presumed that he will ally with Cade, considering his familiarity with the Autobots and their war against the Decepticons.
"Deadpool 2"
The first "Deadpool" film is going to be one tough act to follow, but its creators have assured fans that "Deadpool 2" is going to be bigger. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are working on a script for "Deadpool 2." Following the events in the first movie, there are a lot of directions the sophomore outing could lead to.
The most buzzed-about arc, however, is "Deadpool & Cable." Cable is a powerful mutant and son of Cyclops, and his debut in the big screen was discussed by Ryan Reynolds in past interviews.
"If Cable could appear in a sequel, and it's him and Deadpool entertainingly going at each other with all the ammo they've got," New Zealand Herald quoted Reynolds as saying. Cable's introduction could also open doors to "X-Force," another potential "X-Men" spin-off.
"Saw: Legacy"
The spine-chilling thriller "Saw" is renewed for another movie treatment after five years in hiatus. Screen Rant reported that "Saw: Legacy" will begin filming in September in Toronto, Canada.
The script for "Saw: Legacy" will be penned by Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger, while James Wan and Leigh Whannel will executive produce it.
