‘Godzilla’ Movie Release Date Announced; Will be in 3D

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures announced Thursday that a new Godzilla movie in 3D format, directed by Gareth Edwards, would be released May 16, 2014.

The screenplay will be written by David Callaham ("The Expendables"), David S. Goyer (the "Dark Knight" trilogy) and Max Borenstein (upcoming "The Seventh Son").

In a press release, Legendary said that the movie "will return the character to its epic roots with a gritty, realistic actioner."

Godzilla, the giant monster that is mutated due to nuclear radiation, has captured the imagination of people and Hollywood studios since Ishiro Honda's 1954 film "Godzilla," produced by Toho.

Hollywood finally made "Godzilla" in 1998, which was directed by Roland Emmerich, making it an instant box office hit.

Toho, which owned the rights to the franchise, announced after its 2004 film "Godzilla Final Wars." it would not be making any Godzilla character movie for ten years after marking 50 years of Godzilla movies.

In 2010, Legendary Pictures acquired the rights. It was at Comic-Con 2010, that Legendary first promoted its new "Godzilla" movie. The teaser trailer had "blown the roof off" people who were present there.

The release date is likely to clash with "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," which is also expected to be released on the same date.
