Johnny Depp as Tonto Photos Revelead for 'Lone Ranger' Movie (View Photos, Video)

New photos from the sets of Gore Verbinski's "Lone Ranger" have been making the rounds on the Internet.

The movie stars Armie Hammer as John Reid, the Lone Ranger, and Johnny Depp as Tonto.

Other actors cast in the movie include: William Fichtner as Butch Cavendish, Ruth Wilson as Rebecca Reid, James Badge Dale as Dan Reid, Tom Wilkinson as Latham Cole, Barry Pepper as Captain Jay Fuller, Helena Bonham Carter as Red, Mason Cook as Will, James Frain and Harry Treadaway as Frank.

Depp said the reason why he wanted to play Tonto was "to mess around with the stereotype of the American Indian that has been laid out through history, or the history of cinema at the very least especially Tonto as the sidekick," according to a report by the Daily Mail.

"The challenge was to turn the story on its head and reinvent it," Verbinski told reporters.

According to USA Today, the story will be narrated by Tonto.

"Everyone has heard about the Lone Ranger, but not from the only other who was there -- Tonto," Verbinksi said.

This is not the first time that a Lone Ranger movie has been made. There were earlier attempts, one in 1981 and another TV movie in 2003. Both were not popular with fans.

This "Lone Ranger" movie had troubles getting to the production stage. In 2002, Columbia Pictures started with the idea of the movie. Later, in 2007, The Weinstein Company indicated interest, but it fell through. It was only in May 2007 that Jerry Bruckheimer and Walt Disney Pictures decided to make the movie.

Initially, Mike Newell ("Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time ") was supposed to direct the movie, but it later went to Verbinski ("Pirates of Caribean" trilogy). The screenplay for the movie is written by Justin Haythe, Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio.

Photos have revealed Depp's stunt double. Photos of a train wreck and Lone Ranger performing action stunts were also revealed.

The movie will hit theatres in 2013.
