Resident Evil 6 Release date: Game Ships 4.5 Million Despite Mixed Reviews

Capcom announced that the action horror game Resident Evil 6 has shipped more than 4.5 million copies worldwide since the game's release on October 2. The highest number of shipped copies ever for a Capcom game.

Although 4.5 million games shipped is an amazing number, shipped games are not the number of games sold to consumers. Capcom has not revealed sales figures for the new Resident Evil title as of right now.

The game has received mixed review so far with PlayStation The Official Magazine giving the game a 9 out of 10 in North America and video game website GameSpot giving the game a 4.5 out of 10, claiming that while the gameplay was poorly executed. Destructoid gave Resident Evil 6 an even lower score saying, "Resident Evil 6 is not just a step back for the series, it's a step back for commonplace, unassuming action-shooters."

In a recent interview, Resident Evil 6 producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi said that the franchise can't please everyone and he used an interesting parent and child analogy to describe the relationship between the publisher and gamers.

"The way I always think of it is that if Resident Evil represents a child, then the fans and us as creators are the two parents," Kobayashi told PlayStation Blog. "The resulting games are like the children that are born between both of us," Kobayashi said. "And just like real parents, you're not always going to agree on what is best for raising that child."

The game is a departure from the series previous entry because the story is told through far more characters than in previous editions. Resident Evil 6 allows players to select between three scenarios with connected storylines. There are three main protagonists - Leon S. Kennedy, Chris Redfield and Jake Muller. Another human player can take control of the other character in the scenarios via local or online multiplayer.

The game will also be receiving new mission and modes via digital downloadable content, according to Capcom.

"With its four campaigns offering both single and co-op play either online or offline plus additional modes such as Mercenaries and Agent Hunt, Resident Evil 6 is the most ambitious and comprehensive title of the series," commented Michael Pattison, Senior VP Marketing, North America and Europe. Furthermore the promise of post release content and ResidentEvil.Net show Capcom's commitment to support RE fans for many months to come."

These modes are Survivors Mode, Predator Mode where players control the Ustanak monster, and Siege Mode where players protect a single NPC, while the enemy team, tries to eliminate the NPC. The game will also receive further post-launch downloadable content including additional maps for Mercenaries, which can in turn then be used as maps for Survivors, Predator and Siege modes, plus other items yet to be announced.
