Grand Theft Auto V Release Date: Why Isn't GTA 5 Releasing On Xbox 720 And PS4?

Rockstar Games' upcoming open world action game Grand Theft Auto V is coming to the current generation of video game consoles, because Rockstar believes that 2013 is perfect time for the game to release.

In an interview with Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu that was reported by Polygon, Houser explained why the company believed that next year was the perfect time to release GTA 5 on current generation machines.

"Rockstar is a content company, not a hardware company," Houser said. "We use the technology we have to create content, and we try not to let ourselves get beholden to the hardware. The fact that hardware's so mature right now is exactly why we're able to go on to the next level."

Houser said in the interview that Rockstar experience with the current generation means that they can get more out of the systems capabilities. He added that all of the best games usually come out at the end of game system's lifecycle, which makes it the best time to release GTA 5.

"GTA 4 was our first attempt at a new platform and HD visuals, so the first part of development was seriously difficult," Houser said. "Now we know what the hardware's capable of, so it's become a lot easier to move things along and a lot more fun, too. GTA: San Andras came out at the peak of the PlayStation 2's cycle, and we put out a really good game thanks to that. All the best games for a console come out at the end of the lifecycle, right? So now's the best timing of all."

Houser also explained that the new video game would give players a brand new gaming experience through its five key themes.

"There were five key themes for this title," Houser said. "One, it should have just this really huge world. Two, it has lots of goals you need to accomplish. Three, the number of robbery missions spread throughout the game apart from the main story. Four, the three playable characters; and five, the completely new multiplay. I think when player experience this sort of gameplay they've never seen before, they're going to say 'What the hell is this?' And I think that's the most vital point here."

RockStar announced that the game would be arriving in April 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The company has not announced a Wii U or PC version of the game as of right now.
