Footage from a canceled reboot of the SEGA classic Streets of Rage has appeared online.
The video was uploaded to the YouTube account of the Studio head of Ruffian Games Gary Liddon. The developer is best known for creating the super powered brawler Crackdown on Xbox 360, according to a story reported by Gamespot.
Liddon said the following on his YouTube account:
"Here are some scenes from a playable prototype. It was something we built very rapidly and represents pre-pre-pre-pre (lots of press) pre-Alpha quality. Even so it has a certain charm :)
What's the story behind it all? Like a lot of developers we work on a lot of different prototypes, they're just not usually shown in public. In this case an older version of the same video was leaked last week, which came as a bit of a surprise if I'm honest. As it had no sound I thought there wouldn't be any harm sharing a version with audio.
Beyond that there's not a lot more I can say unfortunately."
The original Streets of Rage was a side-scrolling beat'em up released by SEGA in 1991 for the SEGA Genesis.

"What was once a happy, peaceful, productive city, full of life and activity, has fallen into the hands of a secret criminal syndicate. The leader of the syndicate has somehow managed to keep his identity a secret. The organization soon absorbed the city government. They even had the police force in their clutches. Looting, random violence and destruction are rampant. No one is safe walking the streets, day or night...
As the chaos continued at full strength, three young police officers tried to establish a special attack unit. They were repeatedly turned down by their superiors, most of whom had been bought by the organization or were too afraid to make a stand. One day, when they could no longer stand by and watch their city being demolished, they quit the force!
Adam Hunter, Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding decided to forgo their careers in legal law enforcement and put their lives on the line. They are without weapons, but each possesses great hand-to-hand combat abilities. Take them into the heart of the city and battle the most dangerous wave of bad dudes and chicks ever assembled. Make the city a place where people no longer have to walk the Streets of Rage!"
The game spawned several sequels and ports. It was recently released on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network in the SEGA Vintage Collection: Streets of Rage.
The collection featured all three entries of the Streets of Rage series, achievements, new game trials, Xbox LIVE leaderboard rankings and two player local and online co-op. The collection cost 800 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live or $9.99 on the PlayStation Network.
