Warface is an upcoming free-to-play multiplayer military shooter by Crytek Kiev that is looking to give games like Activision's Call of Duty and Electronic Arts' Battlefield a serious run for their money.
Many have criticized the military shooter's name for either sounding ridiculous or for variety of other reasons. In a recent interview with Rock, Paper, Shotgun, company CEO Cevat Yerli, the game is suitably named because of its subject matter and social integration.
"I think [Warface is] very personal," Yerli told Rock, Paper, Shotgun."I think it's a very social experience," Yerli told Rock, Paper, Shotgun. "Yes, it's a very strange word combination, but I wanted to express that it's a truly social FPS game."
Yerli explained that the free-to-play shooter is a game about war and a shooter video game between players and their friends.
"It's about war on a different scale--between corporate entities--but also, it's a shooter between you and your friends," Yerli said. "That implies so many new kinds of possibilities with the social technology that we've invested over the last five years to build. So that's why we as a company keep going back to 'face.' It's very personal."

In an interview with Eurogamer, Yerli said that Crytek was exploring the possibility of releasing Warface on consoles in the near future.
"We have been talking to console manufacturers, to Sony and Microsoft in particular, about free-to-play games," Yerli told Eurogamer. "A couple of years ago they weren't interested in free-to-play games, and they didn't have the right structure there - which is fine because they were busy. But there was no home for Warface on console."
He added, "Now the interest in Warface is quite high, and it could be an option. We haven't made final decisions, but for me if the current gen or any other console embraces free-to-play and can run Warface, then I'm happy for it to be there."
Warface is Crytek's first free-to-play game and runs on CryEngine 3. The game was originally scheduled to release in North America this year, but is currently still in its beta stage.
