The upcoming animated cartoon movie "Moana" is currently in the spotlight because of its released costume of Maui online. The "Moana" costume shows a traditional Polynesia tribal tattoo and is currently accused of racism.
Disney is currently selling a brown-skinned costume for Maui's character, which comes with traditional tribal tattoo art, an island skirt and padded arms that will make kids more muscular. Consumers have turned to social media to express their disappointment and outrage for the "Moana" "brownface" costume.
People in social media have called the "Moana" costume very inappropriate and accused as caricaturing Polynesian and Hawaiian culture as well as the Oceanic traditions, as reported by ET Canada. Disney was also previously called for depicting Dwayne Johnson's character, Maui, to be overweight and somewhat reinforce cultural stereotypes.
The upcoming Disney movie is about a teenage girl named "Moana," who is voiced by a newbie and a Hawaiian native Auli'i Cravalho, taking a journey across the ocean to fulfil her ancestors' quest and become a master wayfinder. And along her journey, "Moana" will then meet the demigod Maui who will assist as well as challenge her along her adventure.
A first full "Moana" trailer was recently released giving fans a first peek on the movie unveiling its characters and the beautiful landscapes of the island where "Moana" lives. According to report by Variety, the movie is directed by the same team behind "The Little Mermaid," "Alladin" and "Hercules" and will feature an original music by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
As of the moment, Disney has not yet responded to these allegations and Moana's Maui costume still remains for sale between $44.95 and $49.95. The movie "Moana" will soon launch in theaters on November 23. Make sure to stay tuned for more "Moana" updates.
