It all came together for NBC's newcomer, "This is Us," which premiered on Tuesday to stellar ratings. It is arguably one of the strongest pilots to ever grace this year's TV landscape, given the influence of streaming services such as Netflix, which has been pulling more audiences with their original content.
NBC's "This is Us" is set to be a major player not only because of its strong pilot, but also because of the people in and behind it. The NBC newcomer is created by Dan Fogelman, whose credits include Disney's hit "Tangled" and the 2011 blockbuster "Crazy, Stupid, Love." It stars some very familiar names, including Mandy Moore, Milo Ventigmilia ("Heroes"), Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz, and Justin Hartley, Susan Kelechi Watson, Chris Sullivan, and Ron Cephas Jones.
Speaking of Brown, his recent Emmy win for his role as Christopher Darden in "The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story" seems like a win for the NBC newcomer as well. "This is Us" attracted 10 million viewers for its premiere with a twist, Deadline reports. The show was one of the two major players for Tuesday's debut, as CBS' "Bull" earned 15.4 million viewers.
Those who saw the premiere of the NBC newcomer "This is Us" probably wish that it was a Netflix show so that all the episodes could be streamed (and binged watched) all at the same time. Unfortunately, a week long wait is in store for those who want to know what's next following that shocking twist in the end of the episode. Even Brown thinks it's definitely a one of a kind pilot.
Brown told CNN that both the material and every character was very "rich," and that's definitely something audiences were able to capture immediately. It seems that viewers do share his sentiment in the sense that they're excited to uncover more layers to the characters shown in "This is Us"' strong pilot.
"We introduce a lot of pieces in the pilot and you get a strong sense of who all of those people are from the beginning and you want to go on the journey with them," Brown said.
