Elder Scrolls Online Release Date: ZeniMax Studios Explains Why ESO Is Set 1,000 Years Before Skyrim

The Elder Scrolls Online will bring the world of Tamriel to the realm of massively multiplayer online video games for the first time in the franchise's history.

Zenimax Online Studios, the game's developer has recently opened up registration for the game's upcoming beta test, which will give gamers an opportunity to try The Elder Scrolls Online early.

The game's director, Matt Firor recently sat down with 3News.Co for interview where he explained many of the decision that went into developing the new MMORPG.

Firor told 3News.Co that the game is set 1000 years before Skyrim because it allows gamers to explore a Tamriel with its own stories and adventures.

"All of the five major Elder Scrolls games have been set relatively close to one another - so we thought it would be interesting to explore a time in Tamriel's history that is not well documented," Firor told 3News.Co. "Mid-Second Era is a time that includes all of the provinces and races that are well known to Elder Scrolls players, but in a time of upheaval and confusion. This gives players a familiar world to live in, but one that has its own stories and adventures."

He also explained how Zenimax is bridging the gap between its console Elder Scrolls games and MMOs. Firor explained that the development team is aware that two groups of gamers are going to want to play The Elder Scrolls Online- console players who are used to the single-player Elder Scrolls games and MMO players.

"We've designed the game around being comfortable and rewarding for both groups," Firor said. "For Elder Scrolls players, we have the same mouse-driven combat that was used in PC versions of Skyrim and Oblivion."

He added, "Every character can wear any armor and use any weapon, and can optimize themselves in many different ways. Also, of course, most of the game is fully playable solo, but if you do run across another player, helping is encouraged by the fact that all players involved in defeating an NPC will be fully rewarded."

Firor also told 3News.Co that the game would have plenty of things to do even after a player hits the level 50 cap.

"ESO features so many player skills; weapon, armor, abilities, perks that you'll be leveling them long after you hit the level 50 'cap," Firor said. "You can swap weapons and start learning new abilities with them at any time, even at level 50."
