The Elder Scrolls Online Release Date: Game Director Says Combat System Is A Work In Progress

Bethesda and ZeniMax Online Studio's upcoming MMO, The Elder Scrolls Online takes place 800 years before The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and 1,000 years before the events of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

The game will see antagonist the Daedric Prince Molag Bal attempting to conquer the entire continent of Tamriel. The anticipated battles between the game's fractions are expected to be grand and spectacular.

But combat is one of the biggest concerns that fans of the franchise have. Will ZeniMax Online be able to refine the combat system of Skyrim and Oblivion for competitive gameplay?

In a recent interview with the Guardian UK, The Elder Scrolls Online game director Matt Firor says that the game's upcoming beta test will help the studio refine and better develop the combat system.

"We're playing around with all of this now, but obviously with PVP we have to keep on testing and refining - and this will really be helped with the large number of testers we'll get in beta, that'll let us hone the system on a large scale," Firor explained to the Guardian UK.

The system currently doesn't work the same way mechanically in PVP as it does in PVE, according to Firor

He explained, "So you swing with the left mouse and block with the right mouse, but there are a couple of new moves, like a really fast left click then right click will stun someone, plus things like double tapping a key to roll away."

Although sign-up for the game's beta has already taken place, no exact date has been given for when it will actually start. Firor only told the Guardian UK that the beta would start "very soon."

Firor also said, "One of the joys of making games like this is that they're on such a massive scale you need to get a whole lot of players into them to kind of see where you are."

When asked how long the beta process would last and how big the beta is, Firor told the Guardian that the beta would last as long as it takes for the ZeniMax to ready the game for launch.
