'Retro City Rampage' is a Hit on PlayStation Vita

The Vita may have had a tough go of it, but you wouldn't be able to tell that if you were listening to the mind behind "Retro City Rampage."

Sales stats haven't been released yet, but according to a tweet from "RCR" developer Brian Provinciano, the game has thus far managed to sell "much more on PSN than XBLA and more on PS Vita than even PS3." Provinciano encourages other indie titles to make the jump to Sony's handheld, stating that "Sony promoted the game incredibly well and Vita players are hungry for games!"

The game that started out as a de-make of the old top-down "Grand Theft Auto" games exploded onto the marketplace as an 80's love letter, complete with plenty of tongue-in-cheek references to damn near everything from the era, be it movies, videogames, clothing, the list goes on and on. Combine this  with the accessibility and play style of the glory day titles of the original NES, and you have "Retro City Rampage."

The game's still managed admirable sales from other distribution services, most notably Steam. Provinciano noted that both Steam and PSN outsold the game on XBLA. Provinciano seemed disappointed in Microsoft's release date for the game, as well as its cost. He noted that getting the game on XBLA was a difficulty in and of itself. The process involved "two bouts of 6+ months of pitching, paperwork, negotiation just to get onto XBLA. It's absurd. They don't make it easy." Provinciano ultimately preferred Sony and Nintendo, claiming the two companies are more "welcoming to indies."

The game is due out on WiiWare on Thursday, giving a chance for everyone to play the game no matter their choice of platform.
