Facebook to Ease Censorship, Will Allow Newsworthy Nudity

After coming under fire from raged netizens, Facebook will start to reconsider their censorship standards. The social network giant will lift certain restrictions pertaining to female nudity given that it is newsworthy or does not entail any malicious purpose. The action follows the "napalm girl", a historical photo with a nude child girl running away from a napalm explosion.

The circulated photo was repeatedly removed after it supposedly broke Facebook's regulations on female nudity. The public voiced out their outcry from being prevented to post historically relevant photos, according to CNN. This is not the only issue the social media website has received as a lot of socially related videos and content have been removed due to violating the said regulation.

One of the more recent events is with a breast cancer awareness video. It was deemed graphic by Facebook after the female breast was repeatedly and clearly showed. The video explains how women should spot suspicious lumps around their breasts through an animated 3D recreation of the female anatomy. It was a product of the Swedish cancer charity Cancerfonden, a reputable cancer organization.

However, Facebook representatives clarified that their goal is to show more newsworthy content without posing any risk to minors, according to 680 News. They will be adding new tools and features for the enforcement, rather than generally allowing the images to show on the newsfeed of users. This caters to the need of every individual without offending the other.

Facebook has some of the strictest censorship regulations. However, through the years, they have added new features to ensure that the social media website becomes an aid to propagate information without filling it with unsafe content. The lift allows for more freedom in the website which is already the most used and top earning social media platform around the world.
