There were also rumors suggesting that Martin purposely delayed the release of the sixth book because he was furious at the recent story leaks. Amidst all these rumors, the critically-acclaimed author has not addressed the latest rumors and the reason for this disappointing delay pretty much remains the same - George R.R. Martin can't just finish the book yet.

The 68-year-old author has always been candid when it comes to his weaknesses in meeting deadlines. In his LiveJournal blog entry, George R.R. Martin admitted that he's always been bad when it comes to finishing things on time. Some days are great for the author, while some days are not and writing can be a chore during those times. HBO's "Game of Thrones" is heading for its seventh season next year but still, there are no official updates regarding the sixth book in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series. One of the latest rumors suggests that the book should come out sometime after "Game of Thrones" season 7 airs. Although this may sound exciting for all fans, this hasn't been confirmed by George R.R. Martin or his camp.

For now, fans will just have to wait for official announcement from the author himself regarding the release of "The Winds of Winter." As the author wrote in his blog, the book "will be done when it's done." When that time comes, surely fans wouldn't miss it as it's expected to make the headlines. In the meantime, fans can just feast on the excerpt from "The Winds of Winter."
