Wolfenstein: The New Order Will Not Have Multiplayer

The recently announced Wolfenstein: The New Order from Machine Games will be a single-player-only experience.

Bethesda Softworks confirms to Gamespot that the new Wolfenstein will not include a multiplayer component. The announcement means that the upcoming game will be the first non-mobile Wolfenstein game to not have multiplayer in over two decades. The multiplayer component first appeared in 2001's Return to Castle Wolfenstein which continued in the later titles such as 2003's Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and 2009's Wolfenstein.

"It's such a huge part of video game legacy," creative director Jens Matthies tells GameSpot. "If there's a video game museum, Wolfenstein is in the first room. It's the start of the wave that shaped the world of gaming."

"The Q4 2013 release sounds early in the next gen's launch, so is it being rushed out as a launch title or is there more to the story? Maybe it's a much more narrative-focused game. That might sound unlikely given its blockheaded source material, but the ex-Starbreeze staff at MachineGames managed to spin a surprisingly engaging yarn out of the forgetable Riddick license. Plus multiplayer was never really Starbreeze's forte anyway," is how Eurogamer tries to explain why there is no multiplayer in the game.

Wolfenstein: The New Order is headed to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and next generation consoles sometime in Q4 2013.
