A Samsung Galaxy Note 7 battery defect led to the release of smoke while a flight was en-route from Louisville, Ky. to Baltimore. The incident reminded of a similar happening in which smoke emanated a laptop bag in a flight en-route to Chennai from Singapore in September.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Battery Defect Ends Up In Smoke, Literally

Among several unfortunate incidents caused due to the battery defect of the device, the most significant was the one that took place in the United States. It was on October 6 when a Southwest Airlines flight was evacuated as smoke emanated from a Samsung Galaxy Note 7.

The overheating and smoke issue arose because of the replaced ATL battery of the device. According to the JHU Newsletter, the owner replaced returned his SDI battery and took the ATL battery in exchange.

Not The First Time Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Sizzled In-Flight

The Director General of Civil Aviation looked into a similar matter where a laptop bag produced smoke in a flight to Chennai from Singapore. Although the incident occurred in September, it grabbed attention only when the incident was discussed in the lower house of the Indian Parliament, Lok Sabha, as stated by the Indian Express. The laptop bag that eked out smoke was kept in the baggage compartment overhead on a flight. It was on September 23 when the cabin crew staff observed that the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 inside the bag was causing it. 

No injuries were reported but it was considered as one of the most risky incidents while journeying via air. Indian State Minister for Civil Aviation presented a written reply on the matter in the Lok Sabha and confirmed that it was Samsung Galaxy Note 7 the defect of which led to the smoke in the flight.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Stops Production

Following the incident, and many other reports of the smartphone overheating or exploding in various situations, Samsung officially ended the production of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. The company said that the device was going through a major issue and it was something more than mere a battery defect. "The fact that we are dealing with potentially a second recall on top of a first recall is not your normal situation and indicative of a less-than-ideal process that should have involved earlier coordination with the government," US Consumer Product Safety Commission's Chairman said.
